Intermediate Apprenticeships

Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurants have apprenticeships at their heart. The programme offers a 12 month Apprentice Programme combining workplace learning and college based work. Each year young unemployed people between 18 and 24 are recruited and rained to become professional chefs. Around 90 per cent of successful apprentices choose to stay in the profession.

Advanced Apprenticeships

Beauty therapy

Grace completed a Beauty Therapy apprenticeship in a salon during which she learned about a range of treatments that included facials, waxing and make up. During her Advanced Apprenticeship she worked as a Beauty Therapist and she has now gone on to specialise in make-up. She finds her job very satisfying because the outcomes are so positive for her clients. For the future, Grace could consider running her own salon now that she is fully qualified.


Network Rail operate a three year Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme that includes engineering apprenticeships in five trade areas: track, signalling, electrification and plan, telecoms and overhead line.

Higher Apprenticeships


Michelle and Ali are Trainee Accountants, both working for the same firm. After completing their A-levels they saw advertisements for the AAT accountancy course. They were interviewed by a local accountacy firm who agreed to support them through the apprentice route. They have completed the advanced apprenticeship and are now working at higher apprenticeship level with ambitions to progress to ACA/ACCA professional qualifications afterwards. They have both had the opportunity to learn and earn at the same time.

This information is about arrangements in Sussex but it is still useful if you live outside Sussex but want some idea of what it involves.


Ben left school at 16 with GCSEs and started work as a labourer with Westridge Construction. When Westridge advertised for apprentices, ben decided to take up a carpentry apprenticeship. He spent two years working as a level 2 apprentice, spending one day a week at College. After completing his apprenticeship he decided to work towards a career in site management so he has gone on to study an HNC in Construction Management. He spends one day a week at college and also takes part on his employer's own technical training programme so that he gets an all round knowledge of the industry.  His employers expect to see a return on their investment in Ben within two years. 

Early Years Care and Education 

Becca completed a level 2 certificate in Childcare and Education and then went on to undertake an advanced apprenticeship in Early Years Care and Education while working at a day nursery. She is now completing a Foundation degree in Early Years Care and Education at Northbrook and is considering topping that up to a BA degree to further enhance her career prospects.
